Spider House remains one of the few remaining oases of old Austin weird as well as a hotbed of art and culture of all kinds and is recognized as such not only by locals in the know, but countless national publications, such as USA TODAY, which named it “one of the ten best destinations in America”. It’s high time to celebrate the unique haven of art, comraderies and old Austin-style quirk that Spider House Cafe and Ballroom is, so we’ve decided to throw a high-energy party full of music and performance as well as summer fun. Here’s what to expect:
Live music on the main stage from The Octopus Project, who has curated beloved, capacity-crowd spring break shows here at Spider House for the past two years. Dance rock breakout performer Mobley was named a “Band to Watch” by the Austin Monthly and will be wrapping up a long tour in support of his new release here at Spider House. Mobley’s tourmates, LA’s rock noir duo The Peach Kings will also share the stage. Kicking the main stage festivities off are former Spider House Artists of the Month,Wonderbitch and NGHT HCKLRS. As Spider House is home to marching band festival Honk!, it only makes sense that the zombies in Dead Music Capital Band will lead the party into the Ballroom at midnight. And you never know where else they might show up.
Two Stages representing Spider House Ballroom’s past and present; The Ballroom opens at 2:30pm for the best of Spider House’s landmark regular events with Austin Mic Exchange, Austin Poetry Slam, Testify,Mortified, and Spider House Comedy. After the best of shows, popular Spider House employee bands Teevee, Rose Sélavy, Orthy, MCG, andMagic Rockers of Texas take the stage and it all wraps up with notorious bootyquakers, Foot Patrol who have been called “Inspiringly crazy and awesome on stage” by Vice Magazine, so there will be no rest ‘til closing time. Back when The Ballroom was known as “The 29th Street Ballroom”, it was home to some of the city’s best garage, punk and psych bands and we are continuing the tradition with The 29th Street Stage in the Chapel.Loteria, Pleasers, The Rotten Mangos, Shivery Shakes, and the “luxuriously heavy shoegazing” (The Guardian) sounds of Ringo Deathstarr run from 7pm-12am
And when you want to take a break and cool off, festival-goers can beat the heat with a large, inflatable water slide, a Tito’s Vodka dunk tank, corn hole, a custom Spider House piñata and other summer games. Take a chance on our raffle, where a $1 ticket can win you free swag, gift cards, and for one grand prize winner, a year on the guestlist with a plus one to every show we host (including New Years!). Sponsors Tito’s, Captain Morgan and of course Lone Star Beer (Spider House is the #1 Lone Star bar in the entire world) will keep the masses imbibed and lively. The event is free, all-ages and will be a memorable, rollicking salute to not just Spider House, but to the wonderful community who has embraced it and allowed it to thrive for 20 long years. Thank you, Spiderfriends.
